Naviance Website http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=1025 http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=1025#comments Tue, 13 Jul 2010 12:06:09 +0000 chrismacdonald http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=1025

The Challenge:
Naviance needed a new site to market their product to their audience in a more effective manner, speaking more to specific audiences. They had an existing CMS that no longer served the needs they had and they needed a new look for the site and assets. Specifically they needed:

  • A new CMS
  • New branding elements and design
  • Rich media and blog capabilities
  • An easier way to access information

How we helped:
We created a site design based very loosely on existing marketing materials. We created the XHTML & CSS to be integrated into a custom Wordpress theme. We created a custom Wordpress theme that enabled Naviance to be able to easily add new news articles, blog posts, videos, page masthead images and promotions. All of the additions of content were integrated into a custom admin interface to make the additions of new content and assets very easy. They were built into a “wizard” like interface. So very complex additions could be made very easily with no programming necessary.

Our work:

Graphic Design, XHTML & CSS. WordPress Theme Development.

The early days of CSS http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=829 http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=829#comments Thu, 01 Apr 2010 20:25:00 +0000 chrismacdonald http://www.secondnaturestudio.com/?p=829 I am dating myself with this post, but what can you do – I am old. I recently found an article I wrote in 2003 (with the help of my wife to ensure it made sense) for Macromedia’s Edge Online Newsletter, titled “Save Time with CSS and Dreamweaver MX .”

This was the first thing I had ever really wrote for an audience, so I was nervous and excited. That with the fact that I am not the best at spelling much less writing, as you can see from reading this post. I had a client that made a statement years ago that stuck with me:

“Girlfriend can draw, but she sure can’t write.”

This was in response to some technical requirements that I put together, he was right – but I digress.

With our company being a partner with Macromedia I was able to get the chance to write about one of their products. I really could not think of a product that I wanted to write about, but something that I was excited about was the newest things to hit the web and web design field, which was style-sheets and CSS. At that time I used Dreamweaver to do all my HTML & CSS, so I choose that product to write about. I had to gear my writing to “how their product helped me do this” – which I did, but I was really excited with what CSS brought to the table for me as a designer. Little did I know that it would be a primary part of my job moving forward. I had an idea of its importance, but not how much of what I would do today would be based on how well I worked with CSS.

Looking back it is funny to read, what I was doing back then as opposed to what I am doing now with CSS. It had the potential at that time, but still was not being used all the time. I began to use it in all my projects & it became a big part of my programming work. And look at CSS now, controlling not only style but layout of pages and navigation. It is the programming for the user interface for the most part.

So have a chuckle and read this article from Macromedia’s Egde Magazine – My article is in Chapter 5, Saving Time with CSS and Dreamweaver MX.
